I know. I know. When I did this in August I mentioned I wasn’t cut out for this sort of plan. Yet here I am again. Why? Well I love the idea of this, I loved having penpals as a kid and now this is taking it to a whole new level…it involves FOOD!
Here’s the thing. I am not cut out for this simply because I need to be punctual to the point of obsessive. (yes, another piece of the crazy puzzle that makes me…) In situations like these when items/packages are to be in the mail at a certain time and communications need to happen by a certain time, I start to panic….and by panic I mean FREAK OUT! I don’t like to let people down (people pleaser, yes and thank you!) This also might affect the people around me….my family, and when my family is affected by my craziness then “ain’t nobody happy”!
For this month I decided to plan ahead, although I need to make sure about allergies and such. I still decided to start accumulating goodies and if they don’t work out I can eat them myself.
HA! Things aren’t always so easy….the lovely lady I was paired with named Melanie, promptly replied to my email (awesome) and said when asked about food restrictions (in her words please): “I am open to exploring different cuisines, the only restriction being that I am vegan (no meat, or other animal products such as dairy, eggs, gelatin, etc). Also, I usually eat raw vegan, but it’s okay if it is cooked.”
OK, PEOPLE OF THE WORLD: I hate to break it to you (and don’t bother sending hate mail) but being a vegan is a pretty BIG food restriction…never the less, I was up for the challenge…meaning I told my two teenagers to find goodies at the store while we shopped. They were awesome. They read every labels, paid close attention to ingredients and voila!
Note: Understand I have no problem with people being vegan, vegetarian, blue, orange or purple…all I am saying is that me being allergic to fresh coconut is a slight food restriction…being a “raw food” vegan…somewhat of a bigger challenge!
Here is what I sent.
Here is what I received from the lovely: Lucy!
Lucy hit the jackpot! When I opened my box both Sunshine and Bear were all excited and saying: “I got dibs on this and that!” I said wait up losers that’s my box…OK I didn’t say that but I told them to wait until I could at least get a picture of my goodies 🙂
Lucy sent me the sweetest note (which she awesomely decorated herself!) Everything in this goodie box was something I am/was looking forward to trying! Good job Lucy!
Another note: I served Lucy’s Delicious Apricot Jam with an assortment of cheeses last Friday when I had the Food Nerds over, you can read about it here .
Interested in participating in November? Here’s how it works:
-On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!
-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-Foodie Penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you are to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on their blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.
-Foodie Penplas is open to US & Canadian residents. Please note, Canadian Residents will be paired with other Canadians only. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from US to Canada and vice versa.
If you’re interested in participating for September, please CLICK HERE to fill out the participation form and read the terms and conditions.
You must submit your information by November 4th as pairings will be emailed on November 5th!
Isabelle…only slightly allergic to fresh coconut, penicillin, iodine, codeine… 😛
